As the successor organization of the Horticultural Research Institute founded in 1950, the Fruit Growing Research Center (GYKK) considers its primary task to serve domestic fruit growers by implementing practice-oriented research programs and professional service activities. GYKK carries out its work organized in the Budatetény, Cegléd and Fertőd Research Stations, which are joined by the Érdi and Nagymaros Experimental Stations. At these locations, GYKK establishes and maintains plantations for experimental, variety testing and gene conservation purposes, and also creates and maintains pre-base stock plantations, which are the starting material for the production of pathogen-free propagating material. GYKK manages three gene bank collections registered by the National Center for Biodiversity and Gene Preservation. In addition, GYKK has the laboratory infrastructure which is necessary for the performance of its basic task.

GYKK implements breeding programs in order to ensure a range of varieties that meet the needs of domestic producers, in which, in addition to outstanding product value, adaptation to changing climatic conditions and resistance to various pests are prominent aspects. In addition, GYKK carries out cultivation technology developments that help increase the competitiveness of domestic producers in the face of changing environmental and economic-social conditions. in which, in addition to outstanding value, adaptation to changing climatic conditions and ensuring resistance to various pests are prominent aspects.
