Presentation of the Department of Fruit Growing
The knowledge material of the disciplines of the Department of Fruit Growing is based on one and a half century traditions. Big names like Ferenc Entz, the founder of the legal predecessor institution that started in 1853, and later István Molnár Rudinai, Dezső Angyal and Mátyás Mohácsy, János Horn, Iván Okályi, Endre Probocskai and Aladár Porpáczy participated in helping and managing the work of the Department. An independent Department of Fruit Growing was founded in 1939, headed by Mátyás Mohácsy.
In the current university structure, the Department of Fruit Growing is constantly present in education and research, we teach in Hungarian and English at almost all levels of the training offer (BSc, MSc, PhD). In addition to university campuses, we also teach the Department's disciplines at training locations across the border (Zenta-Serbia, Beregsász-Ukraine and Révkomárom-Slovakia).
In the field of education and research, following the path started by our predecessors, our subjects and research topics can be grouped around two topics: cultivation technology and evaluation of fruit varieties. For teaching and research, the Department provides a well-equipped laboratory background (HPLC, spectrophotometer, Texture Analyzer, molecular genetics lab), in addition to this, we have at our disposal the Experimental Plant (collection of apple and pear varieties, drupe gene bank), as well as fruit plantations with the appropriate variety composition at our partners.
In theses, diploma theses, TDK theses, and PhD theses, we always place great emphasis on experimental work and its utilization in practice, and the publication of the results.
